Amy and I decided to rent a movie since we haven’t seen one in the theater in so long.  There just hasn’t been anything that was a “must see”.  We did try the newest Indiana Jones flick, but it was extremely disappointing.  Only Batman Begins and U2 3D were worth seeing.  As a result we have avoided the big screen like the plague and have saved a good amount of money in the process.

But back to my story.

We walked into Blockbuster just knowing we would find a film that was released in the last 6 months that we would like to see.  I mean, come on, that’s a lot of movies.  As we walked down the long new release wall, from one end of the store to another, we ended up with exactly zero DVD’s in our hand.  It became obvious as to why we haven’t been to a movie in such a long time.  Everything is absolute junk!  It was junk when it was in theaters and stays junk when it is available for rental.  I don’t know why we expected it to be any different.  Eight bucks or four bucks.  I’ll still want my money and time back.

Either Hollywood is running out of ideas or they just don’t get it anymore.  Juvinile comedies, stupid slashers, political agendas, bad actions, and retread dramas.  Those were our picks.  We passed.

However, Amy and I did find within the Foreign section a movie which we had missed in 2004 and heard was good – the Colombian film “Maria Full of Grace”.  It was our single selection for movie night and it turned out to be an very good choice.  I highly recommend it.

Hollywood will try to blame their lackluster year on the economy (sound familiar to another business we know??).  But the truth is they are expecting too much from making trite, uninspiring crap.  I hope the holiday season brings something worthwhile, because I do love seeing an incredible movie on the big screen.

My favorite film of 2007 is now on DVD.  If you haven’t seen it, I would encourage you to pick up a copy of this DVD.  It debuted #1 with Amazon and you can go here to see an interview with “Bella” star Eduardo Verástegui.

The opening night gala for the 2008 Nashville Film Festival recently took place. The red carpet walk included Emerson Drive, William H. Macy, Jessi Alexander, Carter’s Chord, Wild Bill, and other notable guests for the debut night featured film “The Deal”.

KFTX GM/morning show host, radio legend and Country Music DJ Hall of Fame member Dr. Bruce Stratton is now a movie star.  He is making a special appearance in the soon to be released western film Palo Pinto Gold.

Shot in Texas, the movie stars Roy Clark, Mel Tillis, Trent Willmon, and Anthony Henslee.  Special guest appearances, besides Corpus Christi’s own Dr. Bruce, by Kinky Friedman, Jay Novacek, Kevin Fowler and Robert Earl Keen.

Dr. Bruce is the bartender, seen at 1:17 into the trailer which can be viewed below.  Notice how well he delivers his lines!

This years Academy Awards were the lowest rated on record.  I watched most of the show and it was possibly one of the most boring Oscar’s I have ever seen.  I was, however, very glad to see Daniel Day Lewis and Diablo Cody win.

Lewis is a tremendous actor.  Seeing him accept the award last night, Amy and I were amazed that the character he portrayed in “There Will Be Blood” came out of his normal personality and voice.  When actors speak on stage, the majority of them are not far removed from their acting presence.  They also act similarly in many films.  Not Daniel Day Lewis.  The man is in a very small group of exceptionally gifted character actors that are on an entirely different level.  An entire different planet of acting.

Although I appreciated all of the movies up for Best Film in different ways, Juno was my personal favorite.  It surprised me how good it was and I found it refreshing in a year of very dark films.

Awards aside, my top favorite of all of last year was the independent film BELLA.  A beautiful and meaningful movie I would recommend for anyone.  Go rent and purchase it when it arrives on DVD!

I went to see the IMAX U2 3D last night.  It was completely amazing!  The hour and a half film was shot at a stadium show in South America.  It was as moving as their live show and the energy was authentically powerful.

Obviously, being able to attend one of U2’s concerts would be preferred, but this explosive multisensory experience is the closest you can get. I hope this is a trend in film making, because I would have no problem handing over $15 to see another show like this from a multitude of acts. If you like U2 at all you must check it out!

The only thing I would have changed is to have the surround sound louder. Maybe one day soon we’ll be able to bring our own headphones to plug in or they will install controllable speakers in each seat back.  Regardless though, it was fantastic!  I will see it again.
