The 44th annual Academy of Country Music Awards are being held in Las Vegas on Sunday night, April 5th at the MGM Grand.

I know my artist, radio, and industry friends are having a large time in Vegas and are preparing for the big night, but mostly looking forward to the after parties.  This I know for sure.

As we prepare to discover the winners, here are a few ACM tidbits in advance…..

Presenters announced for the show include Jason Aldean, Dierks Bentley, Billy Ray Cyrus, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Jack Ingram, Martina McBride, Matthew McConaughey, Marisa Miller, Kellie Pickler, Rascal Flatts, Darius Rucker and Blake Shelton will present at this year’s show.

Brad Paisley won in his fourth ACM Video of the Year award for “Waitin’ On A Woman.” Paisley also nabbed his third Vocal Event of the Year trophy for his guitar-dueling duet with Keith Urban, “Start A Band.”  These two awards were announced recently and will be handed out at the show.

Merle Haggard, Harlan Howard, Dolly Parton, Jerry Reed, Kenny Rogers, Randy Travis, Hank Williams Jr., David Young and Beer For My Horseshave been selected to receive Academy of Country Music Special Awards this year, which are voted on by the ACM Board of Directors and are only awarded during years when the Board of Directors feels there are clear and deserving candidates.

The multi-talented Reba McEntire will host the live broadcast and will mark McEntire’s 11th time as host. She says the ACM Awards hold a special place in her heart.  “It was my first award show that I was nominated for in 1981, the Top New Female Vocalist of the Year,” Reba recalls. “I didn’t win it-Terri Gibbs got it that year–but I was nominated! The finalists for the ACM Awards came out this morning and Emerson Drive picked up nominations for Group of the Year and Song of the Year for “Moments”.

Also, congratulations to my good friend Mike Wrucke who co-produced the Miranda Lambert project which is up for Album of the Year and her song “Famous In A Small Town” which is competing for Single of the Year. Nice work Mike!

I recently witnessed the best country music show of the year so far- Keith Urban & Carrie Underwood.  Yes I know, they are not artists I work directly with, but I’m in this business because I love music and will give it recognition whenever it is good or when an artist does the right things.  I may also let you know when I feel like a song is doing nothing but taking up valuable space; but I’m not here to talk about the Garth & Huey Lewis single today.

Anyway, if you have seen a show with Keith Urban lately and you don’t vote for him as Entertainer of the Year, you are on crack!  I’ve seen him as part of The Ranch and then a few times after going solo.  He has always put on a solid show and is a great guy to hang with, but after the show I just experienced I can testify he is hands down the most charismatic and exciting performer in the country format.  From his backstage visits with fans and radio, to the inventive production and the powerful show, it was done first class.  He gets it!  Carrie Underwood opened and she certainly is a star and a nice fit for Urban.  A complete home run for the guys and the gals.

Between sets a talented DJ was spinning and mixing music from all genres and all generations.  I was impressed how the entire evening was very relevant to the crowd and you could feel the exciting buzz of the house from start to finish.

I am fortunate to be working with Emerson Drive, Whiskey Falls and Adam Gregory because I really do believe they are phenomenal artists, but if all I did was write and talk about my own artists then I would be doing a disservice to you and to myself. We are all in this together and I’m not simply an outlet for company talking points.  My mission is much bigger than that.

This years Academy Awards were the lowest rated on record.  I watched most of the show and it was possibly one of the most boring Oscar’s I have ever seen.  I was, however, very glad to see Daniel Day Lewis and Diablo Cody win.

Lewis is a tremendous actor.  Seeing him accept the award last night, Amy and I were amazed that the character he portrayed in “There Will Be Blood” came out of his normal personality and voice.  When actors speak on stage, the majority of them are not far removed from their acting presence.  They also act similarly in many films.  Not Daniel Day Lewis.  The man is in a very small group of exceptionally gifted character actors that are on an entirely different level.  An entire different planet of acting.

Although I appreciated all of the movies up for Best Film in different ways, Juno was my personal favorite.  It surprised me how good it was and I found it refreshing in a year of very dark films.

Awards aside, my top favorite of all of last year was the independent film BELLA.  A beautiful and meaningful movie I would recommend for anyone.  Go rent and purchase it when it arrives on DVD!
